Turkey Tail Mushroom †
For thousands of years, Eastern cultures have revered mushrooms’ health benefits. Mushrooms are fungi, which are so distinct in nature that they are classified as their own kingdom—separate from plants or animals.
There are approximately 140,000 species of mushroom-forming fungi in the world, but science is familiar with only approximately 10%, while only 100 species or so are being studied for their potential health benefits.
Turkey tail mushroom is one of them.
Also known as
Trametes versicolor, “Turkey Tail” mushroom is often referred to as “the turkey tail” mushroom due to its variety of colors and its resemblance to the tail feathers of a wild turkey—often in brown, cinnamon, buff or reddish-brown colors, but with varying colors, as well. It also goes by
Coriolis, or “cloud mushroom.”
Known as bracket fungi, it forms thin, leather-looking and leaf-like fungi in circular fashion.
Turkey tail mushroom helps support a healthy immune defense† and has a long history of beneficial uses in Asia, Europe and indigenous people in North America.
Beta glucans
As a group of glucose polysaccharides naturally occurring in the cell walls of fungi, bacteria, yeasts and more, beta glucans are natural immune system function supporters.† The body doesn’t produce beta-glucans, so they have to come through the diet, including certain mushrooms such as Turkey Tail.
Ancient Apothecary Fermented Turkey Tail also contains ashwagandha in the form of Organic Ashwagandha Extract(Root and Leaf).

It’s been said that life is all about balance—and that holds true for the microbes in and on our bodies. Good microbes can have good benefits, while bad microbes can have equally bad effects. And downright “ugly” microbes? Well, you get the idea. U-G-L-Y.
The goal here is to have microbial balance, with the good guys strong and in the game because having too many of the bad guys or ugly guys can be a problem.
What Sets Ancient Apothecary Herbals Apart?
Live Fermentation
Essential Oils Infusion
Organic Herbs & Spices
Warming Botanicals
Digestive Bitters
Ancient Apothecary Fermented Herbs are powered by fermentation—our own proprietary, patent-pending, dual-stage, live fermentation process.
What is fermentation and why is it important?
Fermentation is an ancient process used to break down food into more absorbable components.
Here are some key benefits of fermentation:
Fermentation pre-digests nutrients and beneficial compounds into more accessible and bioavailable forms.
In some instances, fermentation can actually make certain foods more edible and more digestible, such as roots, leaves, nuts, tubers, seeds and grains.
Fermentation can increase the presence of probiotics in the food.
Each Ancient Apothecary Herbal formula is infused with Organic Essential Oils and CO2 extracts.
The Power of Essential Oils
Essential oils are often referred to as the “life blood” of plants and trees.
They are the concentrated oils of herbs, plants and trees.
For example, it takes approximately 3,000 lemons to make one kilo of lemon essential oil, while one 15mL bottom of lemon essential oil takes about 75 lemons! To go deeper, there are nearly 300 drops in a 15mL bottle, so 1 drop of lemon essential oil is made by using ¼ of a whole lemon!
Likewise, 150 pounds of lavender is necessary for just one pound of pure lavender essential oil, while one 15mL bottle of lavender oil requires 27 square feet of lavender plants. With approximately 300 drops of lavender oil in a 15mL bottle, one drop equals nearly .09 square feet of lavender plants.
The bottom line: here’s a whole lot of beneficial plant life in essential oils.
These precious oils can be distilled or extracted using CO2 and bottled, and when steam distilled, essential oils keep the “frequency” that they had when they resided in the plant.
Additionally, essential oils provide lipo-soluble fractions of plants. Since plants contain both water- and fat-soluble active compounds, we believe it is important to consume a full spectrum of beneficial compounds.
Fats and oils are beneficial for the effective delivery of key antioxidant compounds.
Therefore, essential oils infused into herbal formulas can help serve as a delivery system for botanicals.
Here’s the takeaway: Essential oils are some of Nature’s wonders!
That’s why you’ll find essential oils in each and every Ancient Apothecary Fermented Herbs.
The Importance of Organic Herbs
It’s no secret that in conventionally grown foods and herbs, farmers often use a variety of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides synthetic fertilizers and many other "processing agents” which often remain in and on the food or herbs. Even washing these foods or herbs can’t get many of these off the produce.
Why? Because nearly 20 percent of the 17,000 (or more) pesticides in use today are known as systemic pesticides—those which reside inside the plant via its root system and have permeated the plant. That’s means they’re everywhere within the plants themselves and can’t be washed off.
To try to avoid these chemicals in and on our food, many people choose to go organic.
That reason alone is enough to make going organic is all the rage these days.
But another important benefit of organic food and herbs is that, because they’re grown organically, these plants are often able to produce their own natural defenses against pests.
As a result, these plants can have some of the very compounds and natural defenses that we can and often should include in our diet.
That’s why you’ll find these health-supporting organic herbs in each and every Ancient Apothecary Fermented Herbs.
PLUS, each Ancient Apothecary Herbal formula features an Organic Fermented Warming Botanical Blend of black pepper, ginger, long pepper and sprouted cumin.
In Ayurveda, black pepper, long pepper and ginger are tied to the Sanskrit word trikatu, meaning three spices or three peppers. Trikatu is an Ayurvedic blend of the fruits of black pepper, long pepper and the rhizomes of ginger.
Each Ancient Apothecary Fermented Herbal formula also features an Organic
Fermented Bitter Botanical Blend of milk thistle, dandelion and peppermint.
Bitter botanicals or "bitters" are historically regarded as beneficial.
By combining organic fermented botanicals, whole organic herbs and spices, hot water herbal extracts and lipo-soluble fractions, Ancient Apothecary Fermented Herbal formulas feature a full-spectrum infusion of the best that Nature has to offer!
Microbes: The Good, Bad and “Ugly”
Our world is full of microbes. There’s no escaping it. Some are beneficial, some are not-so beneficial, while others are downright nasty and threatening. In fact, even our bodies are hosts to a myriad of microbes—good, bad and “ugly”—called the microbiome.
But don’t underestimate the microbiome’s microbial mojo. It’s 50 billion bacteria strong, living on the skin, in the mouth, nose, intestines and more, and has an enormous impact on human health. It’s massive, intricate, personal and complex all at once, and keeping it healthy can help keep you healthy.
Truth be told, anything that alters the microbiome can adversely affect the immune system as well as the bacteria in the microbiome because bacteria interact with the body.
For example, gut bacteria communicate with the neurons of the immune system (and up to 80 percent of immune cells are housed in the gut), directing them to be at attention, to be strong and to protect the body. They also play a role in healthy detoxification, intestinal health, metabolic health, mood health and much more.
You see? Microbes— including bacteria, viruses and fungi —and their balance are MACRO important for health.
But the microbiome is in nearly constant flux due to diet, lifestyle, environment, contact with others and more. Here’s a prime example: in one study, within hours, microbes found in a hospital room’s surfaces quickly found their way to patients’ skin, but at approximately 24 hours, the patients’ microbes attempted to take over the hospital room. The longer the stay in the hospital, the more the two microbial camps melded together to create equilibrium.
This highlights that we are constantly exchanging and interacting with the microbial world around us, and that could be either good or bad news, depending on the microbes.
Modern-Day Microbial Mayhem:
Balancing Out Microbes
Modern-day living has its benefits, but it is also known for some microbial mayhem—everything from “bad’ bacteria, “vexing” viruses, “funky” fungi and even pesky protozoa or parasites.
The truth is that we can’t avoid microbes. They’re a part of our lives. But we can know more about them and help tilt the microbial scales in our favor through intentional dietary and lifestyle steps.
Here’s a bit of general, well-known information about the microbial pack—including bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa—we can come into contact with:
Bacteria are single-celled microscopic organisms that are literally everywhere around us—both inside and outside of the body—and can live in extreme conditions, including a variety of environments, from hot water to ice. Some are good for you; others are not.
Bacteria are tiny but powerful and complex, with a tough protective coating that helps them be resilient. Some have a tail (flagellum) that helps them move around, while others have sticky hair-like appendages that help them stick together to each other, to hard surfaces or on human body cells.
Many bacteria exist in the human body, particularly the stomach and mouth, but they are also found on surfaces and in substances such as water, soil and food.
Then there’s the host of viruses.
Viruses are 100 times smaller than a single bacteria cell, and a bacteria cell is more than 10 times smaller than a human cell. Viruses usually enter the body from the environment or other people or from soil to water to air by way of the nose, mouth or any skin breaks.
To survive and thrive, viruses must enter a human or animal cell and hijack the cell to help them multiply—but they can also infiltrate bacterial cells. Many viruses are able to mutate from one host to the next or even from one species to the next. Some viruses can exist for hours or even days on surfaces such as doorknobs, keyboards and more.
Fungi are primitive organisms that live in the air, in soil, on plants, in water, or even in the human body. Only about half of all types of fungi are unfriendly, and others can be beneficial. Some fungi reproduce through tiny spores in the air, and can be inhaled or they can land on the skin. They, too, are resilient.
Protozoa are one-celled animals that use other living beings for food and for a place to live. Some protozoa are known as parasites, and they take up residence in or on the body and chow down! You can get protozoa from contaminated food or water, a bug bite, or sexual contact.
Parasites range in size from the tiny, one-celled protozoa to worms that can be seen with the naked eye.
Oregano Capsules
Oregano Benefits for Healthy Microbial Balance †
Oregano is an outstanding culinary and health-promoting herb that has been used for thousands of years. Not only does oregano provide flavor for food, but it has also been noted for its antioxidants and for its microbial-balancing benefits.†
In fact, oregano has strong phenol antioxidants that can favorably balance out the microbial forces.
Two of the most important components of oregano are rosmarinic acid and thymol, both of which are powerful antioxidant compounds that not only can help support a healthy immune system.†
Likewise, oregano has microbial-balancing components—thymol and carvacrol—which can help with healthy microbial balance, with carvacrol also acting as a major phenol antioxidant.† Oregano also naturally contains a slightly stimulating agent that can positively influence microbial balance so that the body can keep its equilibrium.†
Oregano also features contains pinene, limonene), ocimene, and caryophyllene to help support healthy microbial balance and healthy immune system function.†
All combined, oregano helps to support microbial balance, while helping to support a healthy immune system. †
Ancient Apothecary Fermented Oregano also contains ashwagandha in the form of Organic Ashwagandha Extract (Root and Leaf).
