The term ‘Vidya’ comes from ancient Sanskrit, meaning clarity, knowledge and learning. Vidya Rum aspires to bring these things to the rum drinker… This pot-distilled single barrel rum comes from the New Yarmouth Distillery and tells a story from Caribbean folklore. Legends of the River Mumma goddess have been told on the island of Jamaica for hundreds of years. She guarded rivers like Rio Minho, which runs alongside the New Yarmouth Distillery, protecting the fish and animals that live there. It’s said that you might find her sitting beside the river, running a sparkling golden comb through her black hair. But don’t gaze upon her for too long because there’s a chance that she might entice you down to the water, before pulling you into the depths. Having said that, this is rum that we would gladly be pulled into the depths of. And what depth it has. The River Mumma Single Barrel Rum from Vidya Rum was distilled in June 2005 and filled into an ex-Bourbon cask. It remained in the fierce tropical heat of Jamaica for seven years, achieving a maturation that might have taken nearer 20 years in Europe. In 2012, it was shipped to the UK, where it stayed until December 2012. It was then sent to Denmark and eventually filled into just 255 bottles at a cask strength of 61.5% ABV. The label was designed by an up-and-coming British artist called Aaron Godwin-Lamptey. His dreamlike and mysterious style is perfect for the retelling of this Jamaican legend, and the colour palette used on the mermaid tails on each label is different, making every bottle unique. The New Yarmouth Distillery is part of the Appleton Estate and is most famous for producing the white unaged rum in Wray & Nephew Overproof. This funky high-ester rum has been tempered by its 15 years of ageing. However, the vanilla, raisin, varnished oak and oily richness cannot mask the bright notes of menthol, coconut, pear drops, passionfruit, pineapple, flambéed banana and cut grass.
