Only introduced in 2020, Angostura Cocoa Bitters are simply delicious. Made with Trinitario cocoa from Trinidad and Tobago, it’s rich, bitter and floral with a boldly nutty cocoa note, plus flavours of cacao nibs, ginger cake and dried herbs. Go heavy with this to build complexity in cocktails with a base of dark or heavily aged spirits. Having said that, we love it in a Martinez made with Mezcal, so maybe it’s just best to experiment. Why not add a slug to your next Mexican mole? The original Angostura Bitters were invented by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, a German surgeon general in Simón Bolívar's army in Venezuela. Based in Angostura, he used local ingredients that remain a well-kept secret to this very day. It will always be an iconic cocktail component, instantly recognisable by its massively oversized label, which was apparently a comedic error when Siegert’s sons separately designed a new label and new bottle without consulting each other on size.
