In 1905, Thomas Fentiman – an iron puddler from Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire – was asked for a loan by fellow tradesman. Security was provided by a recipe for a botanically brewed ginger beer. The loan was never repaid, so Thomas Fentiman found himself with a unique recipe and decided to run with it. Well, he actually sold it door-to-door using a horse and cart. In the 1930s, Thomas’ dog Fearless won the obedience class at Crufts. So, he put her portrait on his bottles. The world may have changed a lot since then, but Fentimans not so much. Today, the business is owned by Thomas Fentiman’s great grandson, and they still botanically brew their soft drinks for a superior flavour. They bottle in glass rather than stone jars now, but Fearless is still prominent on each and every one.
