The vegan-friendly Grande Réserve from Pierre Mignon is just that. This blend of 80% Pinot Meunier, 10% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir from Premier Cru sites in the Marne Valley, Côtes des Blancs and Épernay regions is matured on the lees (the spent yeast that gives Champagne its creamy, nutty and bready flavour profile) for three years. Although this is a non-vintage bottling, that ageing is what’s required by law for vintage Champagne. So, this is really over-delivering on its price tag. Crisp and beautifully balanced, Grande Réserve delivers lashings of citrus overlaid with notes of brioche, yeasty baguette and stewed summer fruit. But it’s the lively and creamy mousse that we fell head over heels for. Consider pairing this with a creamy mushroom pasta as a weekday treat. Champagne Pierre Mignon is a family-owned house based in Le Breuil in the Marne Valley. For several generations now, they’ve been quietly producing wonderfully soft and creamy Champagne under the radar. They deserve to be far more famous, but we do love an insider secret.
